AUSTIN The House Higher Education Committee approved a bill by Representative Dianne White Delisi, Temple, that would abolish the TASP test and institute the Student Success Initiative, a statewide guideline for testing and developmental education programs in state colleges.
"The TASP test is an outdated requirement that needs to be eliminated," Delisi said. "It was meant to put accountability into higher education, but has become a needless barrier for many students. With improved testing measures in Texas high schools, our students are much better prepared for college and do not need to take this superfluous test."
"Non-traditional students, those who have come back to school after years of work, are particularly hard-hit by the TASP," Delisi said. "They shouldn’t have to put their education on hold because of a test with such inflexible requirements."
The TASP test was designed to identify areas of weakness a student entering college might have. Students who do not score at a sufficient level on the test are required to take developmental education classes to address areas where they need help. House Bill 796 does not eliminate testing or developmental education, but allows more flexibility and local control for colleges in how it is managed.
"We still have the same accountability requirements, but allow schools flexibility within those standards," Delisi said. "By eliminating the bureaucracy-heavy TASP, this bill frees up colleges to focus on what they’re good at - teaching. And it frees up students to pursue their dreams."
