Delisi endorses proposed rule change regarding provisional school enrollment for children of military families
|

Temple – State Representative Dianne White Delisi announced today that she is strongly supportive of a proposed rule change at the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) that will make it easier for military families to enroll their children in school.
"Military families move frequently on very short notice and there are sometimes delays in having childhood immunization records transferred," Delisi stated. "The dilemma is that Texas law requires proof of current immunizations before children are allowed to enter school. What this proposed rule change will do is to allow the children of military families moving in from out-of-state a 30-day period of provisional enrollment while their immunization records are being transferred."
Delisi added that this proposed rule change was initiated as a direct result of the citizen input received by the Texas House Committee on Defense Affairs and State-Federal Relations. Its Subcommittee on Base Realignment and Closure (on which Delisi serves as the chairman) held a public meeting on Sept. 23 in Killeen to listen to local military concerns. The ongoing problems that military families were having getting their children enrolled for the new school year were detailed for the committee at that time.
"The very first step in fixing a problem is to point it out," Delisi noted. "The credit for getting this change set in motion needs to go to those who spoke at the meeting and brought this situation to our attention."
